Synopsis

Five siblings – Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane, and their baby brother, known as the Lamb – growing up in Victorian England stumble upon a magical creature, a rather grumpy, ugly, and occasionally malevolent Psammead, a sand-fairy, who grants them a wish a day. But what seems like a fun way of obtaining their hearts' desires may turn out to be receiving their worst nightmares!

Biography of the author

Edith Nesbit (1858 – 1924) was an English writer and poet, who published her books for children as E. Nesbit. She wrote or collaborated on more than 60 such books. Nesbit spent her childhood in France and Germany and later led an ordinary country life in Kent, which provided scenes for her books. She was also a political activist and co-founder of the Fabian Society, a socialist organisation later affiliated to the Labour Party.

Among her best-known books are The Story of the Treasure Seekers (1899), The Wouldbegoods (1901), The Revolt of the Toys, and What Comes of Quarreling (1902), Five Children and It (1902), and The Story of the Amulet (1906).
